1. Is there structure and clarity in my work? Are my goals clear?
If you don't know what you are doing and when it needs to be done, you'll soon wonder what your purpose is. If you don’t know your purpose, you may ask yourself, “Why I am here”? “Why should I go to work today”?
2. Is my team dependable? Can I count on my peers and leaders to do quality work on time?
It is frustrating when we have to wait to do our job because someone else hasn't. We certainly cannot control the actions of others but working effectively as a team is important. It is simple, we need to trust the actions of our teammates.
3. In terms of trust, can I share and speak openly without fear? Without feeling insecure or embarrassed?
We shut down when we cannot speak openly. If we cannot speak openly, we stop sharing. When we stop sharing, we stop communicating, we stop creating! Think about this the next time you are sitting at a boardroom table with your team. How safe do you feel sharing your ideas and thoughts?
4. Am I doing meaningful work? Am I contributing in a way that makes sense to me?
Sometimes you have to work in a role that is unfulfilling to understand what you don't want to do. If you feel this way, it is a good time to pause and reflect. Ask yourself, what do I like to do? Why do I like this kind of work?
Starting a career search takes a lot of dedication and energy and sometimes we just don't have it in us. There will be a tipping point. You'll know when the risk of starting something new is safer than staying where you are.
